SEO
& The Google Dance in November 2003
Prior
to November 2003, by following Google’s
criteria, you would be assured of viewing new web content
within 4 to
8 weeks on the top three pages for specific key terms if optimised
correctly. However, the Google engineers changed their
search engine
criteria, and hence, made it more difficult for optimisers
and advertisers to appear prominently in their database listings
using the same submission and optimisation techniques. Since
November 2003, many significant business listings have disappeared
from the top positions. Consequently, a significant proportion
of these businesses decided to use pay
per click (PPC) services
to artificially regain their positions.
It
is not uncommon for new web content to take between 2 and
6 months to appear
on
Google.com, as most optimisers have observed the pattern
of new sites appearing and then disappearing from view, then
after
each Google refresh of its database each month, genuine listings
with correctly optimised content have naturally surfaced
to the top positions for specific keywords. This is called
the
Google “sandbox effect”. In
addition, Google suggested that their Advertisers developed
a strong Incoming Keyword
Link Strategy to assist organic or natural optimisation. Generally, “useful” sites
will attract a Google Ranking of 4 (out of 10) and above. An “authority” website
will have a Ranking of 7 and above, and are normally sites
that are charities, non-profit organisations and unique informational/educational
sites.
SEO & Research
Marketing
Prior
to any optimisation campaign, the choice of keywords or key
phrases used will either generate qualified
leads or
simply loose business. The research enables us to find popular
and unique keywords with an existing demand, and from these,
obtain “adjacent” or "related" keywords or key
phrases. Some online businesses have benefited from “miss
pelt” search
terms following a thorough research of these relevant terms
! Some of the popular
research tools are listed below:

Google
AdWords Keywords Suggestion Tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox
Titles,
Descriptions & Keywords / Key phrases
- Optimisation of titles. Ensuring the most important key terms
are closer to the left-hand side of the title as possible.
Most titles are 100 characters in length.
- Optimisation of descriptions. The description should include
the keywords in the title. Where possible, we should include
specific product items and locations.
- Optimisation
of keywords. The keywords should include the keywords from
the description, ensuring that a keyword is not
used more than 5 times, in any combination to avoid spamming.
The keyword list may extend to approximately 1000 characters
but this is not always necessary. All keywords need to feature
in the body text of the relevant web page.
- Optimisation
of body text. All important keywords should be apparent
within the body text content and preferably as close to
the top as possible. Body text titles should be bold including
the product and
location.
Best to avoid listing keywords in an endless list, and to
ensure there is sufficient copy so that keywords do not
comprise the
majority of the body text.
Keyword Rich Incoming Link Stratedgy
Strengthening
incoming links. All Google engineers will state the importance
of mutual links with other relevant sites. Prior
to November 2003, this strategy was not essential for a Page
1 or Top Ten listing. However, the most competitive business
sectors within Google’s
listings require this strategy. Aim for non-competitive but
relevant sites, placing their links at the bottom of your
home pages with Google Rankings of at least 4 out of
10. A very small percentage of our
visitors
may
opt to click these links, but in contrast to strengthening
our Google organic presence, this will more than pay for itself.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Pay Per Click Services
Google
AdWords. Reach people when they are
actively looking for information about our products and services
online, and
send
targeted visitors
directly to what we are offering. With AdWords cost-per-click
(CPC) pricing, it's easy to control costs—and we only
pay when people click on our ad. More than 200 million times
a day, people use Google and its partner sites to find what
they're looking for. Let us make sure they find what we are
selling by providing concise information of our services. Our
ads will show up on Google almost instantly (though Google
can disable search terms that they deem are not performing
well enough). We choose the keywords and determine when our
ads will appear by controlling the daily budget and CPC per
search term. We select terms that describe what we offer and
our ads will be displayed to a highly targeted audience on
Google and their partner sites. Online reporting tells us which
search terms are working. Changes are free. We have total control
over every aspect of our campaign except the demand or Click
Through Rate (CTR). As AdWords are driven by the Cost Per Click (CPC) and the
Click Through Rate (CTR), it may be that in order to be seen
initially for the more important key terms, that we may have
to increase our CPC artificially, attract a high CTR, then
lower the CPC accordingly once we obtain the desired demand.
Overture provides the quickest way to obtain
traffic online through the pay-per-click system (enhanced
upgraded paid inclusion
listings). We agree to use a minimum of 20 - 30 key search
terms and decide at what bidding price we wish to begin with
(from a minimum of 10p per click). If we agree to keep our
search terms in the top 3 positions, Overture UK will place
our business as a sponsored site on their partner sites also
in their top 3 positions (AOL, Wanadoo [formerly Freeserve],
Lycos, MSN, Tiscali and Yahoo Europe). Our website will also
benefit from inclusion in other search engines and directories
as a result of maintaining a top 3 position. A campaign may
be online within 5 to 7 business days. See Overture’s
website for further details – www.uk.overture.com.
Yahoo Express Directory
Yahoo! Express is part of a suite of services
that Yahoo! has created to service small business needs.
Through Yahoo!
Express, they can ensure that sites suggested are viewed and
evaluated in a timely manner by Yahoo!'s editorial staff. Our
payment and participation in Yahoo! Express guarantees that
within seven business days a member of Yahoo!'s editorial staff
will look at our site and consider it for inclusion in the
Yahoo! directory. Please keep in mind that payment does not
automatically guarantee inclusion in the directory, site placement,
or site commentary. As with all sites suggested by Yahoo, final
judgement remains solely with Yahoo! editors. The benefit of
submitting to Yahoo is that as the largest recognised directory
worldwide, results are filtered from the directory listing
to Yahoo’s search engine and other third party search
results including Google.
DMOZ.org / Open Directory
The Open Directory is the most widely distributed
database of Web content classified by humans. Its editorial
standards
body of net-citizens provide the collective brain behind resource
discovery on the Web. The Open Directory powers the core directory
services for the Web's largest and most popular search engines
and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google,
Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others. And submission
of sites is free. Approximately 80% of sites are rejected on
the basis that they are “too sales orientated” or
lack visibility of contact details and locality of service.
DMOZ relishes unique “informational” sites.
Informative Optimised Mini-sites
Aim
to construct informational websites that comply with Google’s
criteria. The benefit of well-designed informational sites is
that they can attract a higher Google Ranking, and are free
to submit to DMOZ and Yahoo.com on a non-commercial basis.
Remember, that an inclusion in DMOZ will be fed through to
Google's search results.
Search Engine Submission
Each
month, submit your key websites to the main search engines.
This enables the search engines to recognise
that your web content is still relevant. Hand submission is
the best method of submission. Google's criteria state; "Don't
use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings,
etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our
terms of service. Google does not
recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that
send automatic or programmatic queries to Google. "
Opt-In
Newsletters
One
of the most effective ways of online marketing is through
the regular sending of newsletters via email. Ensure that
your email list consists of contacts who have given you
permission to send out newsletters. Ensure that your newsletter
hyperlinks
to the key services or products pages advertised on your
web site.
eReleases.com
One-way
inbound links are far more powerful than two-way mutual links. Hence, your online business will be
more successful if your website can achieve inbound links
from very popular websites with high Page Ranks. Informative
sites and non-commercial sites tend to have exclusive web
content which search engines enjoy, hence such sites linking
to your web site will improve your page rank, and in turn,
generate higher levels of traffic to your site. Look at the
two examples below:
eRelease.com is a Press
Release Distribution Service that distributes your press release to more
than 30,000
opt-in
journalists and media specialists. This service includes newswire
distribution through their partner PR Newswire.
Other
press release sites include, www.prleap.com and www.prfree.com and free-press-release.com.
Google
Answers
For
a small fee, ask the Google researchers a question that will
add the post online. This is an incredibly easy way to obtain
a high Google listing for key search terms - http://answers.google.com/answers/
Google
SiteMaps
A free
service for webmasters to automatically submit the pages
of their site to the pre-eminent Internet search engine.
The gain for Google is that the Sitemaps service is meant to
provide it with more information about available online content,
with the end result of improving search results for users.
The gain for Webmasters is the potential traffic boost from
having their pages referred to in Google results. With the
increasing importance of search engines in determining the
traffic of a website, the black art of 'search engine optimisation'
can be crucial for a webmaster.
The
automated procedure - currently still in Beta form, like
most Google initiatives - will help re-assure site builders
that their work has been recognised. Previously, sites had
to wait to be 'crawled' periodically by the GoogleBot
spider, or use an 'Add URL' page and hope Google found all
the pages linked from it.
In
addition to having all new content indexed faster, the service
will allow webmasters to prioritise the pages they
want crawled first. http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login.
